i met this little girl in the streets of Panajachel and what started as a casual conversation quickly turned into bartering. i wanted to take her picture. she wanted two quetzales (less than 20 cents in american) in the states, a journalist who pays someone to take their pictures is wrong on many ethical levels. but staring at this little girl, an 8 year old who looked five because of lack of nutrition, i didn't feel an ounce of guilt coughing up the cash. she said her name was cindy, but a lot of the local children have learned how to scam the tourists and have taken on american names in place of their native ones. "Cindy" was adorable and she helped the time pass. here's what she looks like. and it only cost me two quetzales.
